Repurposing the existing roundabout at the front of Kent & Canterbury Hospital to create a new sensory garden for patients and visitors, providing a welcome respite from the hospital operations. Works include creating a memorial wall to honour the lives of those lost in service.
Having worked with East Kent Hospitals University Trust for several years, to be involved with this sentimental project is considered an honour, in what would become a focal point at the hospital for years to come. Funded by the Trust’s charitable grant, the existing green land roundabout required a full renovation to become a sanctuary and place of reflection within the heart of the hospital grounds. Due to the location of this project, extra care and consideration for patients and the general public was our main priority, ensuring that all Bauvill operations were delivered in a safe and non-disruptive manner. This required thorough planning and engagement with the Trust during our mobilisation period, covering all aspects of potential disruption and maintaining a minimal impact of the day-to-day operations of the hospital.
During the work phase, Bauvill systematically delivered the following items to successfully transform and repurpose the existing unused space:
Site strip and clearing of the existing space.
Reduce level dig.
Formation of footpaths and planters.
Creation of memorial wall and surrounding benching.
Install of sleepers and subsequent planting.
Resin and tarmac flooring laid throughout.
The final garden layout included plants and materials to reflect the senses, from aromatic lavender and rosemary, to multi-surface touch & sound panels along with a new lighting scheme so the space can be enjoyed in the evenings. Bauvill delivered this project on short notice and at cost, along with donating 30% of additional plants to enhance the scheme further and support our valued client.
