Medway Maritime Hosp. Emerald Ward

Bauvill were appointed by Medway NHS Foundation Trust to deliver the refurbishment and fit out works of an existing frailty unit within Medway Maritime Hospital to form two new departments, known as Emerald Ward.

01

Context & Planning

Approaching this project required careful consideration for the surrounding operations of the hospital, with live active wards on either side of our works area and passing footfall on a daily basis. This meant that our approach to the segregation of our work area and noise/dust suppression methods needed to be thoroughly addressed and maintained during the programme of works, ensuring that we operate a safe and non-disruptive site throughout. A series of logistical, traffic management and H&S plans were produced along with the formation of an overall Construction Phase Plan to ensure that all aspects had been addressed with the Trust before the work phase commenced. Our project team’s thoroughness in the preliminary stages of this project would be effectual over the coming months, unbeknown that the COVID-19 pandemic was soon to hit.

Major Works

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, whilst many contractors had downed tools and vacated sites across the country, Bauvill remained on-site and delivered the full specification under a strict and controlled work environment. This required adhering to self-imposed COVID guidelines to ensure that all operatives and site personnel could operate in a safe and effective manner whilst keeping this project on course to eventually accommodate an influx of COVID patients. Works included the following items, delivered over the seven-month programme:

  • Full strip out of the existing ward.

  • Reconfiguration of new units.

  • New drainage system which required breaking through deep slab and connecting to existing foul runs.

  • Concrete floors, dry lining systems and wall coverings.

  • New flooring, ceilings and walls.

  • New roof coverings.

  • New air handling unit and condenser unit with acoustic screens.

  • IPS panels, sanitary ware and medical gases.

  • Decorations and finishes throughout.

Completion

The final ward was delivered to a high standard, despite multiple hurdles throughout a complicated programme of works. This project was testament to Bauvill’s dedication and work ethic whilst managing unforeseen risks in collaboration with the Trust, performing daily dynamic risk assessments and evolving our ways of working to accommodate.
