New-build extension and refurbishment of the Clinical Decisions Unit at Medway Maritime Hospital on behalf of Medway NHS Foundation Trust.
Bauvill’s largest healthcare contract to date, this project saw the formation of a new clinical decisions unit within the emergency department of Medway Maritime Hospital, split across two phases. Due to the scale and nature of this project, ensuring public, staff and patient safety was a key priority, particularly when working within acute areas such as the Emergency Department whilst we delivered minors on one side and majors on the other. Both site access and the site compound were located next to operational ambulance bays which required careful reconfiguration to maintain a smooth and undisrupted flow of traffic. The main public entrance to the hospital ran parallel to our work site, requiring a full site enclosure to be formed with a daily banksman to oversee site deliveries and public welfare. Design sign-off and procurement was a key part of this project. Design responsibility was placed upon Bauvill which required us to be forward thinking and proactive to ensure that each item was designed within a suitable timeframe. The process of designing a package or item within a project can be lengthy, with an initial design phase and multiple revisions based on client specification. Once signed off, our highly detailed procurement tracker allowed us to keep on top of long-lead items (such as large mechanical plant, IPS units, doors and custom-made furniture), giving the Trust enough time to sign off designs without jeopardising the project schedule.
Split across two phases over a two-year period, Bauvill successfully delivered the full reconfiguration of the Emergency Department including the following key elements:
A newly built single-story infill constructed in the existing courtyard.
Internal demolition and services strip-out.
Strip-out of high-level armadillo slabs after installing key structural steel work.
Above and below ground drainage systems.
Roofing works to accommodate a new mist tank sprinkler system install.
Mechanical and electrical services installed within the under-croft area (which required a confined space permit for each operative).
New partitions and ceilings installed as part of the unit reconfiguration.
Nurse stations put in place with a new nurse call system.
Medical gas pipework installed throughout.
Finishes including flooring with hygienic cap and cove skirting, antibacterial decoration and medical furniture installation.
The final emergency department handover provided the Trust with an environment which delivered on all operational requirements including several design innovations which will ensure durability and futureproofing for years to come. This project saw Bauvill pool resource at all levels in order to successfully deliver on our client’s overall objectives, establishing ourselves as one of the South East’s leading healthcare contractors.
