Bauvill were appointed by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust to deliver the fit out and refurbishment of a previous derelict ward, to become the new Diabetes & Podiatry ward at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup.
The existing derelict ward was located in the heart of the hospital, adjoined by several live occupational wards and accessible to staff and patients. This required Bauvill’s project management team to establish a series of concise logistical, procurement, site waste management and H&S plans to ensure that all activities could be carried out with the upmost level of quality whilst mitigating disruption and operational services. Early engagement with the Trust estates team and neighbouring ward staff was imperative to the planning phases and provided our project group with valuable insights into the day-to-day operations of the hospital, allowing us to address any specific areas of concern and plan accordingly.
During the works phase, Bauvill delivered the full fit out and refurbishment packages, including the installation of a new air handling unit on the hospital roof which required a complex counter level scaffolding system within an operational area of the hospital. The full scope of works for this project included:
New floors
New ceilings
New walls
New M&E services (nurse call system, fire alarm, data, lighting, small power, ventilation, IPS units with WHB’s)
Wall protection
Radiant ceiling panels
New fire doors and compartmentation
The final project was handed over on time and within budget, providing the Trust with a new fully operational ward in just three months. Bauvill’s project team and site management worked hand in hand with the estates and neighbouring staff to maintain an open line of communication throughout the programme, emphasising Bauvill’s commitment to work in an open and collaborative manner with its client.
