William Harvey Hosp. Bartholomew Cardiology Ward

As a result of winter pressures on the hospital, Bauvill were tasked to deliver the urgent internal demolition and refurbishment of Bartholomew Ward at William Harvey Hospital to increase patient and operational capacity.

01

Context & Planning

At the time of appointment, there were over 30-patients situated within the hospital corridors due to a particularly harsh winter and overcrowding of existing hospital wards. This created an immediate urgency to deliver an efficient turnaround of this project, due to start immediately after Christmas on the 27th December. Bauvill utilised the period before Christmas shut-down to procure all sub-contractors and supplier packages, including placing all long-lead orders in anticipations of seasonal disruptions. Many of Bauvill’s project team worked through Christmas to ensure that all necessary project plans, processes and RAMs were in place to begin immediately whilst upholding a safe working environment.

Major Works

Bauvill’s site operatives began works on 27th December and worked towards a significantly lean programme due to the urgency of the new ward, and the implications that any delays will incur. Works to be delivered comprised of 26 packages, including extensive services within the following areas:

  • Demolition

  • Fire protection

  • Mechanical

  • Electrical

  • Ceilings and partitions

  • Joinery

  • Medical Gases

03

Completion

Bauvill worked around the clock, often 7-days a week, to deliver on a very tight schedule. We handed over the new ward on the 28th of February which incurred £420k worth of variations during the 8-week programme. At points there were over 50 operatives on site, all efficiently coordinated by Bauvill’s project team and site management. This project established Bauvill as a contractor that will go above and beyond to ensure that the client’s requirements are met. We take pride in knowing that our works have enabled patients in the local area to receive a better quality of service and care.
